New tires can really make a 'marginal car' feel quite solid (for a couple thousand miles).

Severely used tires on cars with poor steering components can 'herd you down the road' I.e. wobble and track pavement irregularities.

New(er) tires are much safer!

I get near new tires at junk yard for $5. I have my own tire machine, so cost is minimal.

I have over 20 cars running today on used (but excellent) tires.

A brand new set of cheap tires is not going to help anyone sell a car to me. Would much rather see half or nearly worn out tires with good even wear patterns.

I swear this must be a hang-over from WWII days when tires were hard to get.

Same thing with brand new engine oil. Makes me wonder what the seller is trying to hide.

What getatag said.

Allegedly, new cars have tires designed to feel good in a test drive. A lot of new car buyers go immediately to a tire shop in swap those tires for higher quality. So you might be able to find brand new new-ride tires, at used tire prices.

I believe they were Goodyear RSAs.
