We plan to keep our wonderful 2002 Subaru Forester and the only complaint that we have is that the wheels are all worn and it doesn't look very nice.
These particular wheels are the kind that are not with hubcaps. They are made just as wheels and you cannot put a hubcap on them.
Thank you.

Sure. Not too difficult to do it yourself either with some spray paint.

"Kids these days" like to spray plastidip on the wheels in fun colors. That stuff is designed to peel off but will hold up a good 6 months-year.

You can paint them without taking off the tire. Preparation is key.

Years ago most cars came with either center hubcaps or full wheel covers. Those that had hubcaps often had wheels painted the same as the body color, and they came from the factory that way. The ones that came with full wheel covers were sometimes painted black, regardless of body color, as the whole wheel was covered, so it didn't matter.

So I wouldn't expect it to be any problem to paint steel wheels with automotive-grade spray paint, with proper surface preparation.

Steel wheels are usually painted when new. They can be re-painted. If they are rusty, you need to get rid of the rust, something like sandblasting would work. Surface prep is key in getting a good-looking job.

Aluminum wheels can also be painted, there are "spray bomb" paints made specifically for this.

If you are new to automotive painting, you will have some learning to do. If you want a professional job from the get-go, well, hire a pro for that, duh.

If you are going to DIY, YouTube is your friend.

Search the net for wheel repair near you. Theres plenty of shops that will make old wheels look like new. Only problem is you have to get the wheels off to give it to them. YOu might have to ask them if they keep the car until the job is done.

All fantastic feedback. So helpful. My DH says we will go to a professional and so the comment about looking up someone who does just this kind of thing is really very helpful.
By the way the wheels are steal and not aluminum and they have no rust.
Thank you each and every person for your wonderful comments.

Just to put it out there, you may also find that replacement wheels could be less expensive than repainting. Especially if you find nice used take-offs somewhere. The price for a steel wheel at most junkyards (I've been to) is $25. Used aluminum wheels are more like $100/ea (depending).
