“Maybe the 2020 Toyota Supra isn’t the hot ticket that we expected.
When the Supra Launch Edition started arriving at dealers last July, we saw quite a few of those cars on sale for way over their MSRP. Toyota said the Launch Edition should be priced at $55,250, but as expected, dealers jacked up the price to take advantage of what was perceived to be a hot new sports car that everyone would want to own.”
The Supra is a weird mashup that nobody wanted. It makes no sense why Toyota had to team up with BMW in order to come up with this vehicle.
The Supra was a good car back in the day, and people were genuinely excited to hear that Toyota was bringing it back, but the partnership with BMW kills it.
If Toyota can't or doesn't want to design and build the car themselves in the first place, why should we care enough to run out to the dealers to buy it?

I really like the styling of this the new Supra. I wouldn't buy one for myself but I like the roof lines (kinda like a viper GTS). Good looking car but not for me.
Super speeder Rob from YouTube bought for his rental fleet. Nobody rented it, so he tried to sell it soon after. He didn't even get msrp for it. I saw they are going to be coming out with a better version of it soon.
The first thing Toyota failed to recognize is that the sports car market has been rapidly shrinking. Sales of all sports cars are a fraction of what they used to be, and have continued a down hill trend. So any new entry into the segment must come with very modest sales expectations.
Next, they failed to appreciate that long time loyal Supra enthusiasts would not be excited to be signing up for a BMW in Toyota skins. I think they may have instead thought this would be a hit, since they were gaining access to an inline 6 engine to play on Supra heritage. Supra enthusiasts wanted Toyota engineering, not BMW. So they are not lining up as anticipated.
Third, they did not cater to enthusiasts who still like to shift their own gears. It may not be a large group of people, but there are still some loyal manual drivers who would not consider a new sports car that is offered as automatic only. Toyota basically told them to shop another brand, (A mistake Chevy may be making too, and justifying it by calling on an engineering need to not cut a hole thru their new platforms central tunnel to run a gear selector thru).
Finally, the price. Mid $50's for 335 HP? Fabulous chassis dynamics or not, that is a lot of change.
