1998 Olds 88 sometimes I go to start the car, nothing happens all lights work, radio comes on, headlights work, wipers work, interior lights do not dim when in start/run position, but the starter will not crank, no noise or clicking from it at all, and the security light come on then goes out in a few seconds. Changed battery and ignition switch, work OK for a day, then back to the same problem.
I've had the same problem, intermittently, with my GM car. It's either the ignition cylinder or a passlock issue. On my car, if you turn the key to the run position and leave it there for about 10.5 minutes, the security light goes out. After the light goes out, you turn the key back to the off position, and then start it. I don't know if this will work for your car. Good luck.
Sounds like a battery cable or ground strap. Lights etc working means some contact with the battery but not enough amps to turn the starter. Loose or poor connection of the cables will do the same thing. Many time people change the battery but leave the old green coroded cables still on. Steve
Try wiggling the shift lever when you are trying to start it. It sounds like the neutral safety switch (the one that keeps your car from starting unless it's in park or neutral)
Cleaned battery connections - tried moving shift lever around. Will not crank. The security light goes out in a few seconds. Where is the neutral switch I will try that next. Thanks
"Recall date: 09-20-2004
Units potentially affected: 910,873
NHTSA campaign number: 04V090000
Defective part or component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINEELIVERY
Description: On certain passenger vehicles equipped with 3800 v6 (l36) engines and certain delphi fuel pressure regulators, the regulators have a much higher than usual rate of fuel leaks. A leak can allow fuel to enter the intake manifold through a vacuum line. If the engine does not start when cranked, the fuel from the leaking regulator and a mistimed spark can cause a backfire. The backfire can rupture the intake manifold. The rupture of the intake manifold can displace a fuel line, pulling an injector out of place, and causing a fuel leak and possible fire. Dealers will install new fuel pressure regulators with improved diaphragms. The recall will be conducted in phased mailings. Phase 1 will begin on June 30, 2004, for the 1998-2000 Buick Park Avenue, LeSabre, 1998-2000 Pontiac Bonneville, 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Eighty-Eight, and 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Impala vehicles equpped with 3.8 liter engines. Owners should contact Buick at 1-866-608-8080, Oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537, or Pontiac at 1-800-620-7668."
Thanks for the recall infor. Let the car sit overnight in a parking lot, went to check it out somemore, did not do anything to it, started right up today, got it home tried it a dozen more times cranked each time? This makes 6 times in the last 2 months it has done this.
