I don't understand why everything looks like a Twinkie on wheels now. Ten years ago new cars had a lean and mean look to them but now everything looks oversized and pudgy. It's like the standard formula for a new car now is take a car chassis, stick 4000lbs on it and put a econobox car engine in it and see how slow it can go. I don't understand why the automakers can't just make something like the older smaller cars but with maybe a lot more power. I can understand big trucks being big, but a compact car? Come on.
I just checked the curb weight on a 2012 Civic EX sedan and it clocks in at about 2750 pounds. It's no feather weight but its under 3k. My 2011 Genesis Coupe is about 3000lbs which is less than my two seat 1995 Nissan 300zx weighed and its got more room and seating for four. Cars have definitely gotten heavier due to safety equipment and crash regulations but its not much worse then it was ten years ago. A 2002 Civic is 200-300 pounds lighter depending on configuration.
Being an owner of a 2006 Mazda 3 hatchback, I was not a happy camper when the 2010 hatchbacks were announced.
My first impression of them was, it looked like they added a valve stem somewhere on the body, then pulled up to a compressor, and began filling up the body with air until it looked like a pregnant 2004-2009 Mazda 3 hatchback.
Sadly that is what most of the cars being produced today look like.
They just look fat, and overweight.
Bob.

Here's a short video of the new car I picked up last month. It doesn't look or drive like a twinkie. It may be 4000 pounds, but it does 0-60 in 4.7.
While some US automobiles are large and heavy, a lot of others aren't. The same of Japanese and European cars. But both BMW and Mercedes are producing lightweight and compact high performance automobiles.
Today's cars are tiny compared to those tanks from the 70's.
