I would like to get my husbands SUV accessorized, roof rack, door handle, mirror covers, etc since its gift time soon and I know he misses a roof rack. Should I go to the dealership or a custom shop? The dealership uses some GM products and some aftermarket products. The custom shop uses aftermarket products. The custom shop told me that they get hired by dealerships sometimes, but maybe they are just saying that. This is for a '10 Hybrid Tahoe and the custom shop is charging 1/3 less than the dealership. I know nothing about customizing cars so any informed opinions would be appreciated!

Offhand, I would go with the custom shop, very likely the same or as good accessories for less money.

I don't *think* GM actually makes the roof racks that they offer through the accessory catalogs.

I found the factory racks are not very strong. A good outdoor store like REI, Sports Chalet, Bass Pro, etc carries some heavy duty racks that you can trust. One good brand pops to mind "Thule".

I have bought some stuff for ours off ebay. Bought two receiver hitches from JC Whitney. JC Whitney does not make anything, they are just a distributer.

For racks - it depends on whether the rack is mostly for show or will actually be used to carry stuff like bikes or kayaks.

If it is mostly for looks - the factory racks usually fasten quickly and have already been styled for the vehicle.

If the rack really will be used then choosing a top quality rack like Thule or Yakima is probably a better way to go. They are super sturdy and have tons of different mounts or accessories to choose from.

Thule and Yakima are usually sold at outdoor types of shops like REI, or good bike shops.

Just my opinion but door handle covers, mirror covers, are blingy and ugh.

My 4 door truck had a option of a sunroof, mine did not have it.
When the dealer had a body shop they said they would install a factory sliding sunroof for me.
I returned a few months later, no body shop. I asked the parts manager about ordering the parts for the sunroof. He confessed to me that they would have sent my truck to American Sunroof. He said their work is as good as factory. X-girlfriend of mine had one of their sunroofs in her car and it looked stock.

That's true. Maybe a nice suit-coat in raspberry or canary yellow, and a big gold chain instead?

(New Russian joke, for most of you who probably won't get it...)

True, most sedans don't, imo, but SUVs look nice with a bit.

Thanks for the opinions, custom shop it is!
