One night in a decent hotel will cost you more than what a lot of places charge for a 3-day weekend rental, or a 2-day midweek rental. JMHO.
Wow, I have a 17 year old 4Runner with over 130K miles and I just recently drove it out to the mountains with my wife and 3 dogs, 6 hours each way. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross country if I had too. I keep it well maintained of course.

I've got a Miata with 160k miles. Explorer with 162k miles. Eclipse with 200+k miles. I put 60k miles a year on a car to and from work. Office is 92 miles door to door each way from home.

As long as I can repair something - even if it means a $3k transmission - I'm going to do it. I don't like car payments. I adore my cars. As long as I can keep them on the road I intend to. I can't imagine anything going wrong with one of my cars - short of it totally exploding or catching on fire - that would make me give up on it.

Depending on the year model Eclipse a new transmission could be in your future

I would go absolutely insane trying to do that. With all the wear and tear you put on the cars, and the fact you have to commute at least 3 hours a day, I think it would be much better to move where your job is. A little while back I had to move 15 miles away from my job, which was a 30 mile daily round trip. I could not stand it even that (Vegas traffic). The 4 miles away that I live now is just fine with me.

I have a 1997 Ford vehicle and I don't leave town or go far from town because I'm afraid it could break down anytime. I only go on long trips with a newer vehicle with a factory warranty and roadside service.
