When I replaced my stocks with Michelin Pilots over 3 years ago, I was incredulous. The noise level dropped by a ridiculous amount, the comfort level was dramatically improved, and all the frightening and frustrating hydroplaning simply vanished. Gone. Replaced by stick 'em.
They wore pretty well, with basically zero maintenance: no rotations ever.
Now, do I stick with my stick 'em?
There's supposed to be a new bad boy and player on the block: the X radials.
Can anyone directly compare the two? I wonder how good the pilots are in snow, and if the x radials really are good for 80K.
I have some Michelin Xs on my Nissan pickup. I was awed the same way by them as you were with your Pilots. If I'm not mistaken, the Michelin X is only availabale at Sam's Club or Costco. Mine have been on for more than four years and have nearly 40,000 miles on them and they still look good.
Michelin puts the Pilot name on a lot of different tires... it is not clear to me what tires you are trying to compare. What are the exact models you are trying to compare, for what kind of driving, and what are your priorities?
Use to be Michlin were IMO better tires than many others. Where I live there is a rubber palnt and inthose time michlin was very particulker and the ruber had to be hand stacked not by machne. Now days michlin is machine stacked just like others.Mnay of the nrand nmaes made for wla mrt ;sam's costco are completely different tires than those sold at dealers.Alot of times they are given the names of past tires for dealers.
In particular, I'm curious about the snow performance of the pilots listed above...

Could be, but when I bought 4 michelins a little over 3 years ago (at a big box), I was absolutely amazed by the quality.

By the way, I went in about 10am on New Years Eve to have the tires installed and it was going to be a 5-6 hour wait. Went back Jan 2nd at opening time and was out in less than an hour. They were very professional and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Sam's to friends and family.

Also might want to look at the Michelin Hydroedge. Mine have 75k miles and still cut through water like nothing. At the rate they're going, they should last to the 90k mile warranty. Reasonably quiet, handles well w/ stiff sidewalls and you might a little better gas mileage. But for safety and longetivity you can't beat it.
