Do you think the 73 Dodge Coronet Crestwood wagon, with it's attractive woody trim and round speedo gauges (as opposed to the horizontal speedo on the regular Coronet) copycatted the Chevelle Laguna wagon with it's attractive side trim and round gauges (as opposed to the horizontal speedo on the basic Chevelle)? It just seems so similar

Hmmm... well here are some pics to compare for those that have no clue as to what these cars look like (below). The Dodges design had been around since 1971 I think and the Chevy was new for 1973, so its possible, but GM sold alot more cars than Mopar back then, so I dont know how keen they were to copy Chrysler on anything, but I could be wrong? Interested subject though.

1973 Dodge Coronet Crestwood:

1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu Estate wagon:

and the Laguna Estate wagon, which basically only had a different "nose"...

I could be wrong, but this is one rarity where the Mopar in its most upscale trim line has a nicer appointed interior than the GM car, but the Plymouth was more in line with Chevy, where Dodge was more in line with Pontiac and Oldsmobile. Chrysler with Buick and Imperial with Cadillac.

I'd much rather have a Magnum than a crossover. I actually like the Magnums though, but crossovers are stupid anyway. Has anyone ever made a custom woody Magnum?

Default the Crestwood and Laguna

wagons look very similar and follow the same theme--an upper end mid size premium luxury wagon verging on full size. Same colors(green/woody) I enjoy both just that my heart goes out to the Dodge. Love the clean crisp styling, it even beats the full sizers. I'll bet it was a great car to drive home from the showroom

They were both just trying to beat the Ford wagons by offering somthing different. The Fords were the gold standard of wagons.

I think so. I am not sure about the mid-size wagon sales figures though in the early 70s. I know that the Mopars were on the lowest # of production, but not sure if the Torino wagon outsold the Malibu wagon in the early 70s. I know that the 71-72 Chevelle-Malibu wagons were fairly rare, but not sure how the 73-up were. I will need to research. I know that the BIG wagons in the early 70s, that Ford was the leader, even beating out General Motors, which was a top selling company overall. It was strange, because as far as coupes and sedans went, Chevrolet outsold Ford, but where the wagons were concerned, Ford was the winner.

Wow, I hated those cars when they came out...station wagons were soooo not cool then.

35 years later, I still think they're ugly!

Funny, though how our definition of "mid-sized" has changed...
