I actually work on old cars and was buying and parting out cars that were too far gone to be restored. During this time I actually picked up a 1963 1/2 Mercury Marauder fast back which was a fancier and more performance oriented version of the Monterey. They only made a few thousand of them being that this was the first year they made the Marauder but the thing was way too far gone to restore. The quarter panels were eaten halfway up by rust, the frame had rot, etc. The interior was in surprisingly good shape and was actually really well built and nice to look at. The engine was a 390 which was the same that they had used in the Thunderbirds and Galaxies of the same year. The Monterey was basically a fancier version of the Galaxy as the Marauder was basically a fancier, more muscular version of the Monterey.

I've always liked the looks of the 1963-64 Mercury Monterey's and I also love the fact that the standard motor was a 390 V8, I also remember the Marauder's, were they a performance trim of all the Monterey's, Montclair's and Parklane's?
That sucks that your Marauder ended up getting eaten up by rust, was your Marauder a 390 2 barrel or a 390 4 barrel?

It was actually a 2 barrel. I bought it for $400 off of e-bay. I traveled to NJ to pick it up with my trailer and brought it back to my house on Long Island in NY. On the way home the gas tank fell out of the car along with the trunk floor it was connected to. I would have loved to have redone the car if it were in good enough shape. The parts did good for me though. I sold the Marauder fender emblems for $550 on ebay. Made my money back on just those and the rest of the parts were all profit.
During the time I was doing this I picked up a 1968 Chrysler Newport 2 door hardtop. It only had two small rot holes; one on each quarter panel. I had them filled in with metal. The car is now in primer waiting for paint. It has a big block 383. When I bought it, it was not running. It turns out the timing chain was bad. I changed the timing chain with a dual chain, added Edelbrock aluminum heads, an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, a Speed Demon 770 carb., an MSD billet distributor and ignition set up, TTi headers and many other goodies. I only paid $400 for the car so I do not mind putting money into it. I do most of the work myself which saves some money as well. Even doing the work myself, performance Chrysler parts are not cheap.
I liked the 70s Montereys... Here is a 1973 Monterey. I think 1974 was the last year.... it may have been 1975, but I know it (name) was gone by 1976, when Marquis was the base model.

I also liked the 1970s Mercury Monterey's myself, they looked very luxurious for a base level full sized Mercury, 1974 was the last year of the Monterey (up until when they've revived the name on the minivans back in the mid 2000s), I liked the 1971-72 Monterey's the bestw/the 1963-64's close behind, thanks for the photos of the Monterey's, I also thought the 1971-74 Monterey's looked almost like the Mercury Marquis's of the same era
