I am in need of a good, safe, reliable car for my 16 yr old daughter. Any suggestions? She needs it to be good on gas. I want her to be safe. We only have about 10K in the budget.

Jetta's are usually nice, and you can find one for about half your budget.

MGB OK, that would be if I were 16. Maybe an older Volvo. Built like a tank...

Well, that's the plan. My mother gave her the money. It would be nice not to spend it all. I just don't want to buy something that becomes a fixer upper. Unfortunately, they do not make Sherman tanks that are good on gas either.

i wouldnt get a jetta. modern vws are more maintenance intensive as the years go along and the maintenance itself is more expensive.

i would suggest something that is cheap to repair and is reliable. civics, accords, preludes, camrys, sentras, etc are all fine choices. i would also add a saturn sl series car to the list. great mileage, built to last, and bonus dent resistant body panels. an old cherokee may be a fine vehicle as well, bit bigger if you like that sort of thing; the chrysler inline6 engines are very reliable and get respectable mileage

as far as personal experience, when i was 16 i inhereted my grandmas 1986 maxima and drove it for a few hundred thousand miles(275k before i gave it to a family member who drove it well over 300k).

Shoot I'd spend $2k of it for a car and save the rest for college. Then when she gets a little older and is more experienced, then look for a $5k car.

I do concur with getting her a little Honda. They seem to be pretty good cars.

Get a 5 speed Early to Mid 90's Honda or Ford Ranger if they want a truck. Goto craigslist and limit your search to whatever your amount is! Personally I would only limit myself to spending no more then 3k for a 16 year old learning to drive.
