Hmmm. Did the government have to force them to recall these cars due to repeated deaths from this problem? Nope. Gonna die from difficult steering under 15 mph? Nope. Blaming the victim? Nope. This is how you do a recall.
This recall is nothing serious. The Cobalt is a car that doesn't even need power steering to be drivable. My Ford Escort never even came with power steering, and it does just fine.
Agreed - GM said the affected vehicles can be still be "safely controlled" but it may require greater steering effort under 15 mph (24 kph). Drivers will see a warning light and hear a chime if the power steering fails.
until i see a death count, or proof that the company knew about the problem for YEARS and did nothing, or evidence that shows the company tried to blame the problem first on driver error and then on floormats, i'm OK with a simple recall.
I had a 1980's Honda Civic that didn't come with power steering. Didn't seem to make any difference unless stopped. Not sure how accidents are caused by this.
