Bracing for impact is a bad idea. Let me explain...

Have you ever noticed that in drunk driving accidents, the drunk person almost always survives? Here's why. When you're sober, and you know that you're about to get hurt you instinct is to protect yourself (i.e. If you trip, you put your hands out to catch your fall). Therefore, when you see the drunk driver coming at you, you tense up. The drunk person is in a state of increased relaxation or limpness at the time of an accident. Somehow, they survive.

In conclusion, I wouldn't brace for impact. I'd pretend that I'm drunk and relax.

Why pretend?

Sounds like the safest thing to do is drink heavily and sit in the backwards facing chairs (southwest has some).

I've flown with SW many times but never noticed these seats - not sure I'd sit there, just curious.

Hmm, after googling it seems as if SW has phased out those rear facing seats. That's a shame. It was great if you were traveling with a group as you faced each other and could play cards or talk easily.

I sat in the rear facing seat and it was only a little awkward during take-off, but fine other times.

I agree! Those were great seats. They had them at the last row as well. Given the room to use to get out of the plane in an emergency, I'm not sure why they aren't standard.

Drunk people are annoying when you're sober, just like sober people are annoying when you're drunk.

I usually sleep on planes.

When I was in flight attendant training, we were instructed to yell to people to "remove shoes", so they would not pop the yellow slides.

I really loved the plan for infants and small children, parents were just supposed to hold them...where will a baby fly when a plane crashes?

I think bracing for impact gets your head down out of the way of flying objects and there must be LOTS of them (people who aren't buckled in, purses, laptops, books, food trays, drinks, bottles, etc.)

It also gives you something to focus on, rather than just screaming.

Uhmmm ... head between your knees ?
The only way to kiss your ***** goodbye ?

On the other hand, when we fly ultra lights, and we practice for crash, we teach curling up in the fetal position.
Stretching out your legs, *to brace for impact* is the wrong way to go.
Because of seat belts, we can not bend over to put our head between our knees ...

So .. , no idea really where this head between knees came from ?
