All Nippon Air just bought three A380's to fly to Honolulu. We may finally see a configuration with over 750 seats on a single airplane.

Is this a turnaround for the program, or a giveaway just to get three more sales?

ANA buying 380's was definitely a kick to the groin for Boeing. That decision was made either out of spite or else Airbus is all but giving them away in an act of desperation to keep the 380 line going.

Remember that Airbus' underlying mission is not about profit, but prestige, image, and market share.

It's been a long time since the first Asian orders for A380s
Due | Announced - Airline - A380s
2007 | 29 Sep 2000 Singapore Airlines 10 firm 15 option
2008 | 29 Nov 2000 Qantas 12 firm 12 options

I should think by now that Airbus would almost match the price of an A350-1000 in order to get some A380s flying in Japan. They seem desperate to have someone fly a single class version of the A380 so they can get some data on the plane to show that it is a good way to fly people to vacation destinations.
