Yeah I get it, I just think the old livery is a classic is all.
Yes indeed, the old AA livery was great.... and btw, it looked fine on a white background too
(I think it was applied to some Airbuses, and also some MD80s -- presumably MD80s that AA
acquired used).
Another thing that United did right with its new look was NOT painting a pattern on the winglets.

Probably the MD-80's AA inherited from TWA. American Eagle, the regional affiliate, used a white background as well.
The "friendly skies" red-blue-orange look that came later was also a nice scheme.
That's the Saul Bass designed livery of the 1980s. Loved that one too.
