Mt. Washington doesn't have any dirty secrets I'm aware of. If you have visited it and think you like it, what you see is mostly what you'll get. I think its probably a good deal more than 10 minutes to downtown during rush hour though...

Everyone has pretty much covered this, but Mt. Washington is my favorite neighborhoods as it's pretty set apart from the less desirable areas of the city. Don't get me wrong, you have to be cautious and alert wherever you go in the city, as in any city. But Mt. Washington is charming. It has decent retail, restaurants and the usual yuppie haunts such as Whole Foods and Starbucks. If I should stay in Baltimore, it's the only neighborhood I'd choose to purchase a home in.

My bf and I am moving to baltimore from ny within 2 weeks. We found a great place for under 700.00 for a 1 bedroom in the Canton area. The apt place is called Boston Crossing Apartments on Boston Road. They are super nice people. The apt is 5 min outside of the city and about 10-15 mina way from the Baltimore Harbour. This is there link: http://www.thetimegroup.com/timegroup.aspx?ss=6&id=22

The area you are moving to is not Canton. It is close to Canton though.

Default Huzzah for Mount Washington

I live in Cheswolde, a neighborhood just north of Mount Washington, which often is thought to be part of Greater Mount Washington. This is where most of the apartment complexes are, and as far as I can tell they are well managed and nicely landscaped.
However, both areas consist mostly of single-family homes that are well cared for and inhabited by upscale, civic-minded professionals. A nice ethnic mix, no tensions.
If you won't be happy in Mount Washington, you'll not be happy anywhere in Baltimore. I have lived in Cheswolde for 12 years, and it is by far the best and quietest of the various neighborhoods we have called home in my 44 years in Baltimore.
If you happen to be in the area this week, come and join the parade on July 3rd. 10 a.m.! You might even meet the mayor.
From the Mt. Washington Post (google):

The Spirit of Mount Washington Independence Day Parade is coming up on July 3rd! If you have never experienced the fun of this community event in the past, please mark your calendar this year for this not to be missed neighborhood extravaganza. The parade is a great excuse for catching up with neighbors and entertainment is provided for all ages. There are activities on Wexford Road (outside of the home of Chris and Caroline Tufts) to entertain the children while adults have a chance to chat. There are then some festivities in front of the house before the parade starts. Everyone (and all modes of transportation) participate in the parade. The parade route ends at Springwell, where the neighborhood is rewarded for the several block walk with cupcakes, drinks, lemon sticks, cake, and other treats. There is also a moonbounce and entertainment at Springwell. New this year, Playworks Baltimore will be on hand to organize games as well!
