America's Smartest (and Dumbest) Cities

Oct 24, 2010 6:42 PM EDT For the second year in a row, The Daily Beast crunches the numbers for America’s 55 largest cities, ranking their brainpower from first-to-worst. How does your hometown fare?

The continuing economic malaise just reinforces a perennial fact: A city’s potential lies mostly with the ingenuity and brainpower of its citizens. Regions with intellectual vigor are more likely to bounce back; those without risk a stupor. As The Daily Beast again plays scorekeeper on which cities have what it takes, intellectually speaking, and which fall short, that chasm can be seen in stark relief when comparing the prospects at the top and bottom of our list.

This is from 2010. I can provide current information if you'd like.

Note: I'm not making fun of this situation, because the ranking is merely subjective as we all know...but then again, it's somewhat dismayed that Baltimore is ranked so low considering all these damn colleges and universities that surround Baltimore. Taking into consideration, that the state of Maryland loves to parade to the world about its fine educational school system. What do you think?

Solutions?

What can be done to improve Baltimore's intellectual "brainpower" of its citizens that can benefit the city and her residents?

Really, a thread about us coming in #20 out of 55, ahead of many major cities? How can we improve, how about more parents get involved in their children's lives. There is free k-12 education with meals, and plenty of scholarship opportunities for low income people to go to college. The opportunities are out there, the family structure needs to improve.

What a piece of sh¡t. Boston #1? — Chicago BLACKHAWKS anyone?

Hartford/New Haven #2? In Chicago one can buy anything. If one can't find it, there are small machine shops that can make it. In Hartford one can buy life insurance. Big deal.

Chi-Town has its problems, no doubt, but it still is an earthy, gritty, blue-collar town, very much like Baltimore. If you grew up in one, you can appreciate the other.

Biggest difference? Balto. has a baseball team that could go all the way this year. Chicago? Yeah we got two teams, one in each league. Don't wanna talk about it.

Go Orioles!!!

Default Interesting..

Why does everyone have to go to college? There are other forms of education and technical training.

The family structure?!! Do you really want to open this pandora's box with that statement, when certain laws have been put in place to ensure the decimation of traditional family structures within the U.S.
