I just read The Cuckoo's Calling, which was written by JK Rowling under a pen name. It was amazing.

I just read for the first time Hemingway's Farewell to Arms (found it on the bookshelf at home); very well written (albeit not in a modern style per se) but with a very sad ending.

It was really good. A true murder mystery and a page turner (a la Agatha Christie).

I could never get into Hemingway. I've read A Farewell to Arms and The Sun Also Rises and while I do think he writes very well, I find his style a little too dry.

I'd never really read much Hemingway, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

I go thru phases where I read a lot and then get busy with other stuff and don't read much for pleasure for a while. I like to read a lot in winter, when I'm outside less and watching less sports (no baseball and only one football game a week, if at all).

I did just finish a little bit ago Rafael Alvarez's latest book Tales from the Holyland, a series of short stories about characters in Baltimore ( I realy like Ralph's style and expressiveness) and a reread a dogeared paperback copy of David Simon's Homicide (good read).

Ditto. Nothing makes me feel more content on a chilly evening than a book, a blanket, and a large cup of tea.

FDR: American Badass is my new favorite film. It's a comedy movie about Franklin Roosevelt.

As far as films, right now I'm just waiting with bated breath for The Imitation Game to come out. Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing? Yes, please. This nerd can't wait!

A few months back, Alvarez was up at Towson's Library reading and discussing his Tales from the Holyland.
