Prayers go out to the family and loved ones of BCFD for the loss of three of their finest...When I read about this tragedy.. I couldnt help about think of one of my favorite local movies Ladder 49 with John Travolta and Joaquin Phoenix that was filmed here in town and actually used a Baltimore Fire Company. It has always been a grim reminder of the challenges these heroes face in such an old city with all the dangers of old abandon buildings. Again.. A really really sad story....

It's a crime that 3 firefighters had to die fighting a fire in an abandoned rowhome. The city should compel all slumlords and absentee rowhome owners to make repairs to their properties or impose heavy fines if the subject properties do not conform to the city housing code. If property owners fail to respond, then the city should provide greater funding towards the tear down of vacant and decrepit rowhomes.

Yes, it is a crime, but the biggest slumlord in Baltimore City has usually been Baltimore City. The City owns thousands of vacant, dilapidated homes that have been vacant through many corrupt administrations, and no mayor has ever even come up with any ideas on what to do with them.

This shows that Mayor Brandon is just as bad as all of the other corrupt mayors. I wonder if Mosby will prosecute such cases? She will probably prosecute only if the owners are white.

Baltimore has at least 15,000 vacant rowhomes. That's the number your link and several other Internet sources have cited over the years. The city supposedly has been aggressive in demolishing vacant and decrepit rowhomes, yet it appears the city hasn't made any headway in reducing the number. Demolishing vacant rowhomes helps to lessen persistent problems such as arson, drug dens/markets, squatting, trash, rats and other health and welfare issues. The locals need to bring back Scott Presler to clean up the city. He did a good job cleaning up some alleys a few years ago.

So, according to the news story linked below, the city owns about 10% of vacant rowhomes. That would make the largest owner at 1,500 units.

So you have to wonder if the city is too broke to tear down the ones it owns or is it looking hopefully one day see these areas come back and that they then can sell these properties and re establish these traditional rowhouse neighborhoods.. which is the opposite of what places like Detroit or St Louis are doing.. They are tearing down now and finding alternatives either on an interim or permanent basis on what to do with the vacant land..
