My husband and I are both looking for jobs in Baltimore and/or DC, but we are unfamiliar with the area. Does anyone have any suggestions or info about where would be a good place get a house for around 250k with at least a half acre of land and still be in a decent school district? We would like to avoid subdivisions and "cookie cutter" homes if possible, and hopefully keep our commute (either to DC or Baltimore) to less than 30 minutes. Is this even going to be possible?

It's more possible in the Baltimore area than the DC area.

Half an acre in a good school district, 30 min. to DC or Baltimore, for $250K? Probably not happening. I'd guess you have a 0% chance of finding that within a half hour of DC, and slightly better than that within a half hour of Baltimore (though if it's that cheap, there's something wrong with it). If you look on Realtor.com, you see undeveloped half acres in places like Columbia and Catonsville that go for $250K. That's just for the land, no house.

You might have a shot at Harford County or Baltimore County up near the PA line, though it will likely be a cookie-cutter Ryland home or a fixer, and it's further than you want to drive.

Of course, I'm talking about being within 30 minutes of the cities proper of Baltimore and D.C (and their immediate suburbs). If you land a job in the general "metropolitan region," you may have a few more options.

We'll probably have to settle for a smaller yard then. Thanks for your help!

Anne Arundle County still has a good selection of nice homes in the 250k range.
Glen Burnie has a long reputation for providing a better (safer?) school district than Baltimore, city or county.
AA County also has some nice water-front homes starting in the 250k range.
This area will put you within 10-20 mins from I95, and 30 mins from DC to the South...Baltimore is 30 mins to the North.
