I currently live in Daytona Beach, FL. It's a pretty quiet city, not much violent crime, and the roads aren't congested when traveling around town. I'm a 30 yr old single mom with 2 young kids and I'm looking for a change from this country-like town I live in and the horrible real estate conditions Florida now has and the lack of job opportunities. I need to research Baltimore because I know next to nothing about it and yet I'm thinking of moving there at a friends suggestion (who also is not familiar with this city). What are the best neighborhoods to live in for a family and also have access to "city life"? I've been working at a University so with my experience my plan is to seek employment at a college or university in Baltimore. Looking to rent below $1000/month. Safety is my biggest priority as are good, quality schools. My friend and I plan to take a weekend to check Baltimore out but we're looking blind basically. Any help would be appreciated for a very nervous girl who has been in the same city for nearly her entire life but never felt any connection to it.

Well, Baltimore is definitely different from Daytona Beach. If you want something different from what you are used to, you are on the right train. Seeing as how you have never been here nor do you know much about it, I would suggest a visit first before you make any kind of decision. I happen to love Baltimore. It has it's issues as others will attest to along with myself. But, it fits my life. Not sure if it will fit yours. I wouldn't be nervous about it. Just take some time to come up and explore. One step at a time.

Default just a suggestion...

Sure, definitely check out Baltimore, but for the budget you suggest, you will have to choose your location very carefully and will want to look into charter or private schools for your kids.

Since you work in university/college settings, why not target other college-town-ish areas. Research Triangle, NC comes to mind; Charlottesville, VA, etc.
Also, given the economic climate in higher ed, get the job first and then move. Higher ed is brutal right now, with hiring freezes in many locations. Just FYI. Your mileage may vary depending on the type of role you have in the institution.
