Stay home. New Years Eve is the worst night of the year to be out on the road. Lots of partiers making their way home after too many drinks who just might turn into your lane and lots of police waiting to haul them off to jail. DW and I are well over 40 now (10 years) and have not ventured out for New Year's Eve in fifteen or more years. Not worth the risk. Champagne at home at midnight and watch the ball drop in Times Square on TV. Works well for me! After all it's just another year....no big deal!

Head to Downtown. There's a local lawyer who puts on his informal ball drop (a beachball with lights wrapped around it).

Downtown Bangor rings in 2010 - Bangor Daily News (http://www.bangordailynews.com/detail/133935.html?ref=related - broken link)

As far as road safety, I've got to say that of all of the weekend nights I drive home from work quite late, New Years has been historically the safest IMO.

Most people make sure to have DD's because they know that the cops will be out in full force.

There are a few hotels in Bangor that offer a package- evening meal, dance/drinks, lodging, and breakfast. Not sure which ones, but it might be worth looking into....

I don't go out anymore, it's too much of a hassle. Can't smoke anywhere unless you go outside, which sucks, and you can't relax and have a few drinks and a little fun because there are so many cops hot to bust people for DWI. Besides that, like Mainah, I'm older now and don't party like I did when I was younger. Most years we don't even bother staying up for midnight.

I hate driving around Bangor during the entire month of December.

There are taxis that will do the driving for you

I like the Charles Inn's lobby for drinks and some acoustic music. There are also a couple of bars that have club dancing. And if you like ballroom dancing... I might know of an event for that.

I think just heading downtown and checking out everything on foot and then watching the ball drop and taking a taxi home sounds like fun. But make reservations for dinner that night if you go to any of the places like Fiddleheads, Luna's... Massimo's or Thistles.

In addition to the balldrop there are a number of events (free) downtown that evening. Music, art, storytelling etc. Modeled after a first night style event. schedule should be available soon on downtownbangor.com

Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions...I should post an update. I went with a friend to Jeff's Catering Comedy Show and then downtown to watch the "ball" drop. Not as extravagant as where I lived the past few years but as a Mainah I didn't expect anything different just some good fun.
