Damned shame it has to end this way (dementia); he's one of the greats.

I feel that Sparky got a raw deal from the Reds' organization when he was let go after the '78 season for finishing second to the Dodgers two years in a row after winning back-to-back World Series titles. The club apparently believed that a team with 3 or 4 Hall Of Famers on the roster should win it all every year. The great '84 Tigers team did not have a single Hall Of Famer even though Jack Morris is deserving.
I always enjoyed watching and listening to him. He kinda reminded me of Yogi Berra and Casey Stengel, certainly a throwback to an earlier era. He even looked old back in the 70s so I just assumed he must have passed on at about 110. Sparky - loved ya all the way, except for when your Reds played my Sox back in 75. You were one of the game's greats.
