Stutes has inherited 11 runners on base in games he has entered, and none have scored.
He also has appeared in 50 games, and in 36 of those appearances he didn't allow a run.
Looks pretty good to me, especially for a guy who was considered a marginal prospect.
He's a marginal major league pitcher
There are 181 major league relief pitchers who have pitched at least 30 innings this year. Stutes is:
71st in K/9
139th in BB/9
150th in HR/9
115th in ERA
143rd in FIP
Much closer to the bottom of the list than the top in most categories.
It's only a matter of time until the hits and home runs start coming with inherited runners on base.
I hate to even be sending you this e-mail, and I'm quite embarrassed to say the least, but we have a young client on the Philadelphia Phillies who asked us if we knew any agents at Innovative Artists and could connect him to Antoinette Nikprelaj.
I know you're not a dating or set-up service, but John Mayberry Jr. (Phillies OF) would love to meet Antoinette or invite her to a baseball game sometime. Would this be possible?
He added, "Here's a bio of John to give you some more info on him (he's a great guy, down-to-earth, humble, Stanford-educated, etc.) Thanks for considering this as you know how this business is and servicing clients.
I'm thinking we are going to see a lot of players getting rested the rest of the way at this point. Maybe Howard needs some time off. Guy looks like he can barely run to first base.

Please tell Charlie this before he lets Stutes pitch in another high-leverage 8th inning situation. thx

Interesting.
The average game leverage when Stutes enters a game is 1.14 (1 is an average situation). Bastardo (1.69) and Madson (1.59) come into the highest leverage situations-as they should, since they are better. Contreras (1.15) entered into similar situations.
Using Win Probability Added (WPA), it’s very easy to tell exactly how much a specific player contributed to their team on a game-by-game basis. In short, if a player increased his team’s win probability by 6% (0.06 WPA), then they get a Shutdown. If a player made his team 6% more likely to lose (-0.06), they get a Meltdown.
This season
Stutes 16 shutdowns, 8 meltdowns
Bastardo 33 shutdowns, 4 meltdowns
Madson 29 shutdowns, 3 meltdowns
Stutes' ratio of shutdown to meltdowns is 2/1. He's 68th out of 135 qualified MLB relievers this season.
Stutes is nothing special.
EDIT:
And, just in case my point hasn't yet been made, his ERA (http://thetruenameofjesus.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/HALLELUJAH_by_Lillyanna.jpg - broken link), is 94th out the 135 qualified relievers.
I'll stand by my comments, Filihok. Looks like a good low cost option to me.
At the minor league minimum, sure...put him in your bullpen and let him pitch some low leverage innings.

If you expect this to be repeated, you're going to be disappointed.

The 36 scoreless out of 50 games is really not that impressive. 36/50=72%
Do you consider Alex Burnett a good pitcher?
He's a Minnesota Twin. He's 2-5 with a 5.44 ERA. In 48 innings he's walked 20 batters while striking out 31. He's held the opponent scoreless in 43 of his 60 appearances. 43/60=72%
Alex Burnett has pitched 48 innings and allowed 48 hits, WHIP 1.417
Michael Stutes has pitched 54 innings and allowed 42 hits, WHIP 1.248
Like I've repeatedly stated now, since you have difficulty letting things go, Stutes has been a decent relief pitcher for a guy who was not considered to be much of a prospect going into this season.
