I'd like to see them give Rollins a shot in the 5 hole,also.3 more days til they report!
In reality the best hitter should hit 3rd which is Polanco, Rollins isn't an RBI man and Utley needs to have a good start. Rollins should bat 1,2, or 7.
From this table, we can define a set of general guidelines that any manager should follow for an optimal lineup. The batters in slots 1, 2, and 4 have the highest chance of scoring runs. Conventional wisdom has the third hitter as the best--these numbers clearly disagree. If you were to rank your batters in order of quality, your top three hitters should be in slots 1, 2, and 4. The next two batters in quality should sit in slots 3 and 5, with the rest in the lower slots in descending order. Between the top three hitters on the team, ideally, the best home run threat would go in the fourth slot, and the most patient hitter would lead off. Between the guys slotted third and fifth, the player with a higher slugging percentage would bat third, with a higher contact guy in the fifth position.
The old-school book says to put your best high-average hitter here. The lead-off hitter should already be in scoring position and a hit drives him in. Wham, bam, thank you ma'am.
The Book says the #3 hitter comes to the plate with, on average, fewer runners on base than the #4 or #5 hitters. So why focus on putting a guy who can knock in runs in the #3 spot, when the two spots after him can benefit from it more? Surprisingly, because he comes to bat so often with two outs and no runners on base, the #3 hitter isn't nearly as important as we think. This is a spot to fill after more important spots are taken care of.

What???????? Polanco has a career batting average over .300 and you call him one of the worst hitters on the team. He averages only 44 strikeouts a year lets compare that to the rest of the Phillies players. Next you'll tell me that Howard and Utley are great hitters because they walk as much as they strikeout...um nevermind Howard strikes out way more than he walks. Howard is a homerun hitter, Polanco is a contact hitter, calling someone a bad hitter who hits around .300 every year is just nonsense. Polanco is the only guy on the team able to get a hit against any pitcher. I'd love to see the numbers against good pitchers which is what matters in the playoffs, we all know Polanco and Ruiz were hurt for the 2010 playoffs, I'm hoping Utley was as well. On base percentages are nice but how many runs can you get in the playoffs off of walks against a good team.
Nice lineup, I see 450 strikeouts with the first 4 guys. What happens when they play a team that can pitch like the Giants? Same as last year. I hope Dominic Brown can hit a little bit, he was pulled from winter ball because he was hitting well below .200.
RBIs are meaningless, what did Howard have in '08 over 140, are you telling me that the Phillies, would of won in '08 if Howard had say 50 rbi's. Thats why A Rod and Pujols get paid so much, its just for homeruns not because they drive anyone in.
