i realize its a bit early, but in reality the 2 teams playing in the finals dont have much/any room in the free agency conversation anyway.
i found this sites breakdown pretty interesting. best and worst case cap room shown.

NBA

where does your team fit?
mine doesnt look terribly exciting.

I think Boston, Utah & Portland are the 3 teams to watch this year. Toronto could be interesting too. If DD leaves, that'll give them some room to go after a big free agent. Should resign Biyombo, but I think he'll be a hot commodity in the summer.

I think my team (Bulls) is headed into a rebuild and will not be much of a factor in pretty much anything for a couple years.

I'm on the Piston train. They can be a factor if they can find a perimeter scorer.

HUGE money out there to spend...it's going to be funny watching some of those teams get STOOPID in bidding wars over 2nd tier players.

Yep, like Harrison Barnes, after his Game 5 and 6 performances, no less. All it takes is 1 team to offer big money, and somebody probably will.

But to your point, where do we draw the line between 1st and 2nd tier players? In my mind, only one 1st tier player is available this summer, and that's, of course, Kevin Durant. Demar Derozan, Al Horford, and Hassan Whiteside are the next best available. They're difference makers, sure, but still not part of the 1st tier.

As a Portland homer, I am hopeful we can score a couple good free agents. However, due to a very high state income tax (11%) and a very "white" mentality of the city (also, a lousy night life) make this a tough place to attract free agents.

I lived in Portland for three years and attended numerous Blazer games, those were some of the most fun live sport events I've ever attended. Great team and great fans.

"White" mentality of the city? The goddamn city is 76% white. Of course a majority white city is going to have a white mentality.

I think you drew the line fairly well.

Basically giving near max or max deals to guys that might put up 1 all-star level year in the next 5, are heading into decline, injury prone and just generally not a top 20-30 NBA player.

I'm thinking about a team giving someone the Amare Stoudamire Knicks contract or the Steve Nash Lakers deal type scenarios.

It's just classic psychology and for some teams that money is burning a whole in their pocket while wiser teams might just pass up this years FA's and patiently wait for a better time to make their move.
