MobileMom52,

Do they have any children? If not, would they consider perhaps a condo? I ask because The Reserve at Cedar Lodge is a great place for the younger professional crowd. Beautiful condo establishment, only 4 or so years old, extremely well maintained and close to everything. Minutes from Town Center which has a slew of entertainment ie restauraunts, book stores, shopping, etc. In addition, it is only about 2 miles to the interstate in the heart of baton rouge. I would estimate a drive to campus be approximately 15-20 minutes.

The HOA site is down right now but here is the site that has a little bit about it:

If you need further assistance, I'd be happy to help. Good luck.

If commute is an issue, then Shannendoah may not be to your liking. The congestion along the main arteries to and from LSU during peak hours is eratic and problematic. I get shorter commute times all the way out in Central.

The Kennilworth recommendation is a good one, imo. You can get a 1960's or 70's 3br/2ba. home with a good sized yard for $250k. Obviously, prices vary a lot based on sq footage, property size, and condition of home but that's still a great neighborhood and is pretty close to LSU and is in general a convenient location in Baton Rouge.

The Reserve is cheaply built and overpriced if you ask me. Everyone says the walls are some of the thinnest of all the Baton Rouge condo/apartment developments.

And for the money they would spend on a condo near Towne Center they could get a bigger townhome in Brusly with a yard.

I think they have ruled out condos; no kids yet, but perhaps in the near future. They've been in rented apartments, townhomes and condos all through grad school and post-doc, and are ready for some space.

From what SIL has said, I think the search will be closer in than the 'burbs, as he doesn't want to spend much time on the road; he's used to just walking or biking when possible (he has realized that may not be possible.)

They're receiving daily real estate updates from the agent they are working with, and I'm forwarding the good info from here. I think they will be well-armed for that May house-hunting trip!
