Hello all!

It is quite possible that my husband will be getting a job close to OLOL.
My husband and I will be in Baton Rouge later this month and would like to have some ideas of what to check out while in town.

We would appreciate any general information about the area as well as information about our neighborhood options. Being a part of a welcoming Catholic school/parish is important to us. We have two small children one of which will be starting Kindergarten. Our price range would be $400,000-$550,000. Don't mind looking at 'fixer uppers' if priced right and in an area that is actively gentrifying.

I am very excited about the possibility of moving to BR!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

$550? For rent? It would be extremely difficult if not impossible to even find a 1 bedroom in a safe area for that price. The only thing I can think of is to look far out of town... perhaps someplace in Donaldsonville or Plaquemine would have a rental in that price range. Good luck and I'll try to come up with some other suggestions, but a 2 br rental will run at least $750 or so.

I was wondering . Well in that case you'll have plenty to chose from. Most families like the Shenandoah area; there's great schools to chose from and nice homes. Your husband would have a decent commute either the interstate or straight down Coursey Blvd. It really depends what you want in a neighborhood but at that price point you can get in almost anywhere in BR, in fact I would consider it excessive for Shenandoah.

BR has an excellent catholic school system, so you aren't limited by that factor. Another area I would suggest you looking at is Southdowns. The homes tend to be older but it's a great location in the middle of everything, and close to your husband's work.

Do some reading on the forum and feel free to ask lots of questions! You'll love Baton Rouge; its a great place to raise a family!

You can get into almost any neighborhood you want with that budget. $550,000 buys you ALOT of house in Baton Rouge.

I have looked at some homes online in the Southdowns(south of BR/10?) Does anyone know how these older neighborhoods are doing in today's market? Are there young families moving in this area? It would be a bonus if we could be close to his job.

Also, I understand there are many Catholic Schools to choose from but I would like a sense of what they are like...i.e. Are some geared more towards academics, arts, sports? Which ones are considered to be more welcoming and diverse? Any opinions and or information would be welcome!

Southdowns is a very popular older neighborhood. It has a very strong real estate market.

As far as Catholic Schools, do you need info for high schools or elementaries?

We are specifically looking for elementary schools right now. Though, if they did have both a elementary and a high school it would be a bonus.

Inside Baton Rouge, there really aren't any Catholic high schools and elementaries that function under the same name. In Southdowns, there is St. Aloysius Elementary on Stuart Avenue. Also in South Baton Rouge, there is the St. Jude School on Highland. And then there is St. George School on Siegen Lane. Farther north, at Government Street and Marquette Avenue there is Our Lady of Mercy School.

For High Schools, you have Catholic High (boys only) and St. Joseph's Academy (girls only), both located in the Garden District and near Acadian Thruway. These are the most convenient to Southdowns and OLOL. In North Baton Rouge, there is Redemptorist High School and out in Shenandoah area there is St. Michael High School. But the latter two wouldn't be convenient to your work at all.

Thanks, MetroBR.

I have found some of the schools you listed online. It is hard to get a true impression of the church and school community via pictures etc...I am hoping to get more details from others who have experience or knowledge of the individual schools/parish.

If anyone does, I would love to hear from you.
