I have a job offer in Baton Rogue (location: 8500 block of United Plaza Boulevard) and would like to find a safe, clean, place to live in BR that is within a 15-20 minute drive to/from the job. I keep hearing how bad the traffic is and therefore, don't want to live too far from work. Seeking a relatively quiet neighborhood not near LSU campus.

Can someone please tell me what areas/zip code would fit the bill? Can you please include areas with both apts/condos and single homes; not sure if renting or buying to start out.

Thanks!

Try the goodwood/Bocage area. Very old and traditional, with beautiful tree lines streets with very old oak trees and an older population. It is a very safe neighborhood that is very close to where you are working.

I second Goodwood. Also Tara and all of Jefferson Hwy.

Thank you both for the info!!

One other question: Seems every property I look at only offers electric stoves. Is gas cooking simply not popular in BR, or is there some other reason for why gas stoves are so sparse?

we live in a home with a gas stove. it is off of Airline Highway, but may be too far for you. I think the traffic here is JUST LIKE any other city I have lived in. Rush hour is rush hour, do not let people scare you into thinking we are like Miami traffic or Atlanta-now those areas have "real" traffic IMO!! Good Luck!

That's off the Essen between two interstates, right?

Kenilworth and some surrounding areas (between Perkins and Highland) might be good too. We rented two years (near LSU) before purchasing current house (near Magnolia Wood/next to Kenilworth) in 2010. It really helped us to see what the city really looks like. We are from New England and our house has a gas stove as well. :-) Good luck!

Depending on what you're willing to spend and what your interests are... I really like living off Jefferson. There are some great condos over here. I've noticed prices going down on some of the units that are up for sale; not sure about rate changes on rentals.

Not true. It's like Houston, but just on a smaller scale. Last time I was home I sat at LA 1 and I-10 for countless minutes looking at the city I miss so much.
