Plan to move to Baton Rouge in near future (3 - 6 months) and will either be bringing a boat (30' sail) or buy larger for use on Mississippi and tributaries. (not trailer boats) Have only been in area 5 or 6 times, haven't seen seen a marina close to Baton Rouge. Should I be looking further South? Because of water conditions on Mississippi I'm guessing there may be some on tributaries. Suggestions?

Thanks, annie_himself, I guess Baton Rouge is not an option.

Any other recommendations out there?

I see the occasional recreational boater out on the Mississippi, and I always think they are crazy. There's way to much barge traffic, and the currents are very very strong. Now Lake Ponchartrain does have a very active boating community and is well known to be a great area for sailing. There are marinas at Madisonville, Mandeville, Slidell, and of course New Orleans. All have active sailing clubs and have regular races.

If you are looking for a nice place to retire and sail, I can't think of a better area than Mandeville or Covington. You should visit and check it out.

You'll be in Lake Ponchartrain or possibly the Mississippi Gulf coast.
Welcome to some great sailing areas...

May the warm wind at your back not you your own
