As I see Baton Rouge as my next place of employment, where is the best place to live, in or near the Rouge? I have a new born, and a wife. Safety is important, along with reasonable housing. Please help!

Hi.
Any idea what part of town you might be working in?
What do you consider "reasonable" housing?
Do you want to be in the middle of "everything", rural area, ect..? How far & time wise are you willing to commute each day?

The school I will be working for is in Baton Rouge. Will be moving in the summer. "reasonable" housing. Will rent for until find something to buy. Price range for rent and mortgage about 1200 month. Want to commute about 20-30 minutes. Coming from Detroit area, but used to 3-4 bedroom house with an acre of land surronding property.

Clownface- we're in nearly the exact same boat. I'm a teacher in the Detroit area too and my family and I will be moving to BR this summer. We're looking at the Denham springs area. Our budget is a little higher than yours. We NEED a 4 bedroom, and there are a lot of options. I've already contacted a leasing agent who's searching for us.

If you want an acre you might want to look at the out lying areas around Baton Rouge. I had a hard time finding that with in the city. A 20-30 commute is about right from any of the surrounding areas. Prairieville, Gonzales, Central, Denham Springs and Walker. You can also find some homes with acreage in Baton Rouge, but I found them to be a bit pricey.

Baton Rouge is a relatively safe city, but like anywhere, there are good and bad parts of town.

The realtor I used was great with helping us relocate. If you would like his name I would be happy to private message you with it.

I hope you find what you are looking for and enjoy living in The Red Stick.

Thank you for your responses. I will look into the areas that you have mentioned. I hope this move will be a great new start for my family. I will keep you posted in what transpires with the house search.

mdiaab-you mentioned a leasing agent. What do they charge and how do they work?

Well the agency we found leases homes for people who have put their homes on the market, so they are probably paid by the home owners to find tenants and manage their homes. We're going to begin seriously looking in mid-April in preparation for a late June move.

What school will you be working in (if you don't mind my asking?). PM me if you like.
