I work from home and want to try out seasonal living between Austin in the winter and either Portland or Bend in the summer. I am single and enjoy going out to bars to hear local bands play. I am also very active in outdoor sports and crossfit.

I like Bend for the outdoor activities but does it have enough nightlife? How many singles are there in Bend vs families?

Age range?

IMO there are lots of families and older married folks in and around Bend. Are there singles? Of course! But the nightlife ain't like Portland.

I hang out with the 20 and 30 something crowd. I live in Denver now and enjoy the summer activity such as outdoor concerts, festivals, day trips.. Winter's, I hibernate and that is why I am looking for a change. Bend seems like similar to Denver and would be a fun change of scenery. Yet I am wondering if it is too small a town to offer as much.

If you are just looking for somewhere to live in the summer, want an active nightlife, and have access to the outdoors, I'd say Portland. Bend is great, but it's small. We have more of the resort like offerings of Vail or something in terms of summer nightlife. Portland in the summer is really fabulous. You will be close enough to enjoy the coast, and also visit Bend on occasion as well.

The singles scene in Bend is pretty limited (according to my single friends). I'm sure you would have better luck in a larger city.

If you want nightlife, go to Portland.

In Bend we are too tired from hiking, boating, bicycling, and fishing to stay up late partying.

Well, this is only partially true. I know plenty of 20 and 30 somethings that still stay up late and party. For the size of Bend, we actually do a vibrant nightlife. It's just not anything compared with Portland or other larger cities. My husband is a musician, and actually plays in three bands in town. There are definitely people that come out a support live music here. We also are home to close to 20 (I think--I've lost track) breweries, so there is no shortage of beer culture either. It's relative though. I moved to Bend from a comparable sized city and the nightlife there was non-existent. Here I am perfectly happy. However, I have friends that move here from larger cities who feel it's lacking.

If there is one complaint about Bend I have heard a number of times, it is that the singles scene is lacking.
