My husband and I are considering a move to Bend. I am a first year elementary teacher in Colorado, with a provisional license. I am boggled over the licensing process in Oregon. I cannot figure out what type of license I need. I have a B.S. degree in Forestry, and went back to get my teacher certification through an intensive post baccalaureate program. I would like to apply for my Oregon license, but don't even know where to begin! I have been to the Oregon Dept. of Edu. website, but there are so many licensing choices, it is confusing. I emailed the department, but the short answer I received was to look at the website. Can anyone steer me in the right direction?

I was also wondering what the pay is for substitute teachers in Bend? I have looked on the Bend-La Pine District website, but could only find the pay scale for certified teachers. I found a quote of $120-$140 per day on the NEA website, but it was old information (2000-20001 school year).

Thank you for your help!

The link below will give you the information you want on licensing. In case it gets blocked by city-data's system, try doing a search for Oregon Dept of education licensing or go to licenseinfo.oregon.gov It is also covered in the Oregon Revised Statutes ORS342. I don't know what the salary is for substitutes but I would think you could call Bend-Lapine School District administration offices and they would give you that information

In Oregon, it's the Teacher Standards & Practices Commission that handles teacher licensure.

Their FAQ page includes a section on how to apply if you hold an out-of-state license. Check it out --> HERE.

My understanding is that you complete the application, and then the TSPC will tell you what (if anything) more you need to do.

Can't tell you about sub rates, but you could probably find out with a quick phone call to Human Resources.

Best of luck -- Bend is a beautiful (albeit fast-growing) area!

BTW: TSPC is notoriously UNhelpful with inquiries .....

Thank you both for the links. I was under the impression that I had to decide which license to apply for. I will actually be visiting Bend next week (yah!), so I will be sure to stop by the school district main office. I imagine HR will be more helpful in person, especially since the TSPC hasn't been helpful so far! I look forward to visiting Bend!

Given Bend's spot as the #1 overpriced area in the country, the lack of family-wage jobs, and the infrastructure gifts given to the developers, Bend will be a fiscal morass in the next year or so. If you go there - it is nice - RENT, because it's doubtful you will have job security. Besides, give the place a couple years for prices to fall.
