I have read alot about Bend being polluted, having forest fires, people in bend not being friendly, and housing not being affordable.

Are there jobs? I work in Social Services- Substance Abuse Prevention, and my husband works as a website developer.

We are not really interested the night life or bars. But are looking to start to start a family in the next few years.

If anyone has suggestions, insight, or anything else that may be of use to us that would be great!

We are also looking for a reliable cross country moving company, if anyone has any suggestions.

Thank-you in advance!
Bend has great air & water, there have been forest fires in the past. You find the people in Bend are really friendly, well at least in my experience. Housing is VERY affordable, even more so with how bad the economy is. The job market is pretty bad right now.

icet123abc, It will be quite a change moving from the "windy city" to Bend, OR. But, if you are looking for a less urban area with a lot to offer, Central Oregon might be just the place for you.
As others have already said, it would be best to secure a job or other source of income before moving. Finding a good steady job in Bend may be quite a challenge. Since you are planning to move in August, I assume you have thought through all of that.
One good thing about the poor economy in Central Oregon is that a low cost rental, or better yet, a home purchase is much easier to find than in recent years, with low interest rates and many discounted properties now available. If you would like some professional help in that area, I know an outstanding realtor who has been in Bend for 14 years and his company could help you with moving arrangements, locating a rental, or a purchase.
I would be happy to give you his contact information. If you're interested, please send me a direct message on this forum.
Best wishes on your move to Bend.

Check out the State Req's for AOD Counseling. Three steps, all requiring successively higher degrees. To be a full D&A Counselor, it takes either a BA or Masters.

Bend is a great place to live. Very friendly people. My wife and I moved here in 2004 and remarked about how happy and friendly everybody is.

The inversions and forest fires are common across the entire west but each situation will only happen at very specific periods of time. Late summer for forest fires and some years are better than others. Inversions happen periodically in the winter for a few days at a time.

There are quite a few web development companies here who work in every language...php, ruby on rails, .net, coldfusion, etc... Some of the companies are growing and are hiring too. Try G5 Search Marketing for Ruby on Rails. Smart Solutions for .net and Alpine Internet for PHP. My company is in need of a part time coldfusion developer at Interactive Website Development in Bend Oregon - We Build Travel Websites & Lodging Websites & Rafting Websites - Quicksilver Interactive Media.

There are a few tech groups as well. Check out cowpu.org to reach many of the web developers in the region.

We are moving down to Bend this month! I landed a job in the tech field in Bend. I was surprised that there were actually a number of development shops hiring. I anticipate this to increase in the coming years as I think we will see the startup community blossom in bend.

icet123abc,

Are you still planning to move to Bend this month? My girlfriend is 25 and just posted a message on this forum on where to meet new people; it might be of interest to you. You can check it out here.

Good luck,
Dave

one post, and ..... *poof*

Its hard to learn something, if you post a question, and never check back. I wonder if icet123abc has over 2,000 posts around the US and Europe, all with the prefect answer, just waiting to be read.
