Is it too late to change it to 'Living with a Dog in Oahu.' ?

Guess I better frigin' figure this out before I get there

actually, I'll just start another thread. This one is turning into a 'dog on the plane' rant thread. About 1 post in 10 is useful and I doubt anyone would read this far through a rant thread to provide kind information.

OK, I'll join the rant.

'Comfort Animals' and service animals are two different things.
I feel better with my big pink blankie and rocking chair. Can I take those?

People who have emotional assist dogs should just take a xanax.

People who have a service animal can not live normal lives or function outside their home without assistance. It's kind of like a wheel chair.
People trying to pass off fluffy as a service animal should suffer the same penalties as those who park in a handicapped spot. (Along with the same scorn)
The advantage of having law enforcement issuing the ticket is it can be a misdemeaner. Airlines cant do that.
It's crime and a fraud and should be treated like any other.
That way if fluffy goes on the plane and the plane crosses state line, its way serious.

True, a bit of ranting here, but you have to admit you enjoyed being purposefully obtuse. Withhold information, and everyone will respond to what the think you mean or are doing. You could have just said everything up front and you'd likely have gotten more on target answers. Kind of unfair to shake your finger at us when you could have elicited a different response.

If someone says they want to bring their dog over for a month and asks if they can take them around town, it's not unreasonable for folks to start to warn the poster that bringing a dog over for a month is unlikely or unwieldy. I mean, why tell you that XYZ beach is OK, if you can't bring the dog in the first place? Then to say you don't have to conform... well that may be true, but it doesn't give enough information and is still a prod.

Now that you've been clear, and we all understand that you:
- are on a private flight
- have some sort of disability
Then of course your dog will have an entirely different reception than one that appears to be just along for breakfast.

Oahu is much more populated and developed than the Big Island. I'd say you want to keep your doggie on a leash in the very populated areas, just because there's the same street traffic as in Los Angeles. Voice command is good, but it's noisy, and your doggie might get stepped on by distracted wandering visitors. Find some more remote beaches like North Shore, but still watch out for local pit bulls. We aren't joking with that, they are the number one dog on the islands, and sometimes the owners are proud of the aggressive display.

I'm afraid I'm not much help with places to eat on Oahu. When I've been there, it's been mostly the Waikiki type area, so I don't know of a good spot to enjoy outside dining and your canine companion.

I do wish you a fine trip and maybe afterwards you'll come back to advise everyone of what you found out. That way others will benefit from your experience.

But, if you have a great dogsitter back home, you might just enjoy yourself a little more by not having to worry about cooping them up in the condo, barking while your gone, annoying the neighbors, (even if you swear they won't do that!), and having to worry what beach is dog friendly. You will likely miss out on some fabulous places, as they won't be dog friendly.

Be sure to jump off "da rock" at waimea bay-surf pending. You prob can't bring a dog there.
Take a horseback ride in Kahuku, can't bring doggie there either.
Snorkeling N. Shore is fabulous, follow a sea turtle for a while- don't wanna tie doggie up to a tree in the heat or to be stolen.

I have dogs, I know how heartbreaking it will be to leave them, but when I get to go on a vacation, I hate not being able to be "spur of the moment"

ALOHA!!

(no, this is not another "how do I do it" thread)

The reason for being vague about transportation is I didn't want to talk about that aspect. It was meant to be a discussion of would it be enjoyable to take a dog to the Island or would it seriously cramp our fun.
OK, so It didnt work out the way I planned.

Oh, I dont have a disability (outside of being abnormally attached to my dog

As for a private flight. I'm hoping to '***** him out' and catch a lift.
Nothing makes a celeb look more down to earth than playing with a 'stray dog'

What, you thought those were spontaneous?

But seriously.
Wife is coming over to work and will be busy 6 days a week.
Not having any kids I kinda take the dog when I head out.

In my younger days I could meet girls and just go out an do things.
I'll be 50 by the time I get out there and a 50 year old asking a 20 something if she wants to go surfing has a certain creep factor in it. Most people my age have grown up and can be no fun.

hmmm, perhaps I should start a thread about that.
Do 50 year olds surf, run, bike, rollerblade and play beach volleyball etc. there?

Ok, stop by Seattle, drop your pup off at my house with my 2 dogs and we'll both go to Hawaii, with your super cool wife, who wouldn't mind you surfing with 20 yr olds.
We would have a BLAST!!!
Looks like he doesn't like Miley Cyrus!!

Maybe the creep factor is more the married part. Lots of surfers here all ages, that shouldn't be the problem. 20 year old girls are going to be naturally more wary, and if you aren't what they consider attractive in a 'candidate' way, then they will likely turn you down. Safety first. It's a fact of life, that at 50, MOST men are not as attractive to 20 year old girls when compared to 20-30 year old guys. Time to find other ways to bond.

But groups and guys will welcome you, if you are looking for fun and not something else. When you are hanging with the other guys, the girls will be less wary. It's the loners who are most creepy.
