This summer I am coming to Hawaii with a friend and we are planning to stay for 2 months (June and July). We need some advice on how to go about the best way of finding someplace to stay. We would preferably like to be in Hilo near the city. We aren't sure if we should be looking now, knowing that we are in Ohio and would have to do everything via Internet or phone. Should we wait closer to our trip? Or should we wait until we get there in June?

VRBO.com , and definitely consider booking now. Since you're looking to stay for a couple of months, I'll bet you can negotiate prices directly with owners.

Wife and I spent two months, June and July 2011. We found a rental near Naalehu and loved it. We chose there because it was about mid way Kona and Hilo. From there we took extended day trip to visit other parts of the island and actually spent several nights in other areas. We found our place on VRBO.com. Two months make for a nice visit. I leave tomorrow for a one month trip...this time mainly hiking and backpacking in the national park and a few other locations.

For 2 months you will need one of the vacation rentals. I suspect it might be possible to get better than the advertised rate for such a long time period.
