We've found Verizon to have the best coverage. At least for our area near South Point and for our drives to Kona and Hilo.

We have AT&T phones and had good reception in most areas when visiting. I used them both kona side and Hilo side. We did not remember to check them frequently, so there could be large areas they did not work and we simply did not notice.
