Aloha!

We are making some large compost bins and am wondering if there is a place near Hilo (I live in Pahoa) where we can buy some red wiggler worms. Anyone know?

Mahalo!

More than likely, if you make compost bins that are open to the ground below worms will appear out of thin air. I have no idea how they get there, but frequently they will just show up.

If you're anywhere near Leilani, they're thick up there, even in the moss high up on trees. I used to find them in my rain gutters every time I cleaned them (gross).

Lay down some cardboard or plywood anywhere it rains and there is at least a half inch of soil (doesn't work well on bare rock) and check under it after a few weeks. There will be a billion wigglers underneath them. Cardboard seems to work best. Careful when you harvest the worms because the centipedes like those areas too, especially if the lot has been ripped.

Word of caution: little fire ants LOVE compost bins.

Who knew we had worm farmers around? Remember back in the '70's when worm farming was the new big thing? That was before ostriches and llamas, I think.

Be careful on the cardboard. Termites love it. I had a lot of trouble w/ termites in Hawaii, and here in Florida too, until I sprayed everything w/ Boracare. It does not prevent them from coming over for a bite, but it kills them, so they will not set up a colony. It is a permanent fix too. You never have to reapply it.

You could try asking for the worms on Criag's List or posting a request at J. Hara store if they have a bulletin board. Or ask someone in Hawaiian Acres, there's probably a lot of folks who would know who the worm people are?

At this moment, there's one person over in the Kona district selling compost worms for $30 a pound. (How do they weigh worms, anyway? Eeew!)
