I'm also sorry to see it go. It was my mom's favorite place to stay in the area back in the late 90's to 2000's, for its ambiance I guess.
All of the places along Banyan drive were funky then. One of them had rooms with no opening windows! What were they thinking?

We've stayed there many times. Not my favorite place to stay, but it had its own, uh, charm

They're saying October 2016.

DoubleTree by Hilton Hilo Naniloa Hotel

I really hope this works. Hilo could use a nationally branded hotel.

Obviously you don't live in Hawaii or have experience with how things work here. October 2016 might be the goal, but they will probably be lucky to get it done by the middle of next year. Nothing is ever done on schedule here

As a public company - there is more accountability legally than just being a goal - and certainly Hilton has extensive experience working in Hawaii.

The hotel is already listed on the Doubletree site (although not yet accepting reservations - that probably won't occur until 3 months prior to opening) with Oct 2016 opening date. Companies like Hilton utilize contractors with stiff penalties for missing dates and has far more influence in the contracting/permitting process than a no name brand. By now, all the permits would certainly have been secured - and delays would be more likely attributable to things like mold/termites than anything else. (It isn't like they are building a telescope or ferry)

Considering that the original plan called for a "full conversion" date of December 2015, it sounds like they're "on schedule."
