I support the construction of the TMT. Too many good-paying jobs are at stake.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. However, backwards is as backwards does, and it appears that backwards is prevailing.

How many jobs all together?

The telescope managers
The gift shop
The road crew
The snow removal people
The ?

I wonder if anybody has actually found out just how many people are directly and indirectly employed and how much money is at stake.

Maybe make a few future projections for small local business that will be created as the TMT starts to really bring the tourism to use it.

It is amazing.

300 jobs for construction - 140 thereafter

$1,000,000 in rent per year - 80% towards stewardship of mountain 20% to Hawaiian Home Lands

$26 million in operations when operational.

For the Big Island - big numbers.

IMHO, if Kamehameha would have had the opportunity to have a telescope like this built in his kingdom, he'd have been all over it. He really liked new tech and thrived using it. Seems it would be part of his legacy to have a telescope on Hawaii island. Maybe they could name the telescope after him?

That is an interesting argument - what would the ancient Hawaiians have done? Would they think TMT is a good idea?

But really, why is the wisdom or authority of someone who lived 250 years ago greater than that of modern Hawaiians? It is the same problem we have with the US Constitution - it was written 250 years ago yet it dictates how we live now in a very different world.

I think in both cases you have to ask what makes the most sense today and it is up to the people living now to decide that. We live in a democracy so just vote on it. But everybody has to live by the outcome. No more protests once it is voted on.

I was a scientist for many years so I am somewhat sympathetic to TMT but I also think Hawaii and Hawaiians got totally screwed 120 years ago. To be honest I am not sure how I would vote.

I propose it be named after a much more significant person, James Cook.

I always have a hard time with this argument -

It isn't much different that the people in California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah were screwed 170 years ago.

Or, Texas 175 years ago.

Just let the Native Hawaiians have a casino - and things will be fine.
