I have a question.

Is Punatics pronounced like faNATICS? Or

Is Punatics pronounced as PunaTICS?

I think it’s the first, but my SIL who has lived here for 40 years pronounces it like the second one.

Which pronunciation is correct?

Mahalo.

It's like 'lunatics' but starts with a 'P'.

It would be lacking the desired effect of incorporating the word sound "Puna" if pronounced in the first way.
The intention of this pronunciation is to associate residents of Puna with the idea of them being lunatics.
Indeed, many do seem to qualify as such.

And they embrace it as well. Having been one myself, (several decades ago), we would use it ourselves. It's not a derogatory term, it's more of a description since the whole vibe in Puna is very accepting of things outside the norm.

Yup, and you can get a "Punatic" bumper sticker for your car at Jungle Love in Pahoa.

Mahalo to everyone. Never even thought about it sounding like lunatics.
