Howzit! Will be moving to Hilo in a few months and was wondering what everybody's opinion about an apartment called Val Hala. Any input would be great appreciated.

It's not exactly the best part of town. Not that Hilo has anything real urban slum like, though.

Mahalo nui for the input, is it a bad area or manageable? I know there's a fantastic hotel right next to it that everybody raves about. I am just having a hard time looking for apartments as most property manager does not want to rent site unseen.

It's the apartment complex where convicted murderer Anthony Poulin sexually assaulted and drowned the 5 year-old daughter of his girlfriend in the bathtub.

I live in this area although not on the same street. As previously said this is not the best part of town, but a bad neighborhood is Hilo is relative. I don't know where you are moving from, but chances are the bad neighborhoods in your town are much much worse than Wainaku. The neighborhood can be loud. There is a lot of foot traffic and there is definitely a population in Hilo that is a little out there and also a drug element and I would say a higher percentage of those people live here than maybe some other areas.

With all that said, I really enjoy living here. We have really nice neighbors who take time to speak to each other and look out for one another. Generally, people are friendly and helpful. As anywhere, you should be smart with your belongings and your person. I'm kind of a nervous person and I feel safe here. Be respectful and you should be fine.

I will say from experience that it is incredibly difficult to rent a place here from out of town. If at all possible you should wait till you can be here in person to find a place. There are definitely scams out there that target out of town renters and you might also want to visit the neighborhood at various times of the day and night to really get a sense of what you are renting. Also, being from the mainland I was kind of used to rentals being listed way in advance. It's not really like that here. Places seem to come available with little notice and go very fast so if you aren't here to jump on it right away you are at a disadvantage.

Good luck!
