My buddy Orville, a 30 year old lesser sulfur, is very sick.
He eats only apples and then throws them back up. Drinks a lot of water and throws it back up. Sits on the bottom of his cage when he is in his cage. His bottom hole is very red and swollen and he tried to poop but nothing comes out. Yet, he is still in a good mood, playful, ornery and active when he is out. He sits low like birds do when they are sick.
He is going to a bird vet today, but I have found bird vets mostly make an educated WAG and either cannot do anything or just start trying things to see if they help. All the avian vets we have encountered have to also be dog, cat, cow, lizard and everything else vets, so maybe there is a vet here who has more specialized bird knowledge. We are trying a new vet, but I am not that optimistic. Birds are not common enough of pets for someone to truly specialize and there is not as much research as there is for dogs, cats and horses.
So I am wondering if anyone has had a bird with similar issues, or has any suggestions. Any foods that are especially helpful for digestive problems?
Not likely we will find any help here the vet does not know, but at this point we will look everywhere for help. He is supposed to outlive me.

Well, I am at work, but he went to the vet with my daughter an hour ago. Still waiting to hear back
Prolapse. That is it. He had the surgery. He was groggy and miserable for a day then seemed to get better, playing, being ornery, eating and drinking each day, then Saturday morning he was dead.
He was an amazing character. Incredibly calm tolerant, happy. Maybe because he had only one wing and spent the first few years of his life with no cage in a dorm with people constantly playing with him, but he was unlike any other bird. I feel like I have lost a child. 30 years is not enough. He should have outlived me.

Agreed with the prior post. Sad to lose a companion as your did, Coldjensens.
A prolapse is a very serious condition and is not easily treated and or guaranteed to be cured unless treated very early. I have unfortunately seen it happen from time to time with parrots for almost 30 years.
