Please remember that Birmingham is separate from its suburbs, which are mostly incorporated cities of their own: Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Trussville, Hoover, Gardendale, Pelham, Pell City etc. Mountain Brook is probably the toniest suburb in the entire state, with the top-rated school system, some of the most expensive homes etc. Vestavia and Homewood are not far behind. Hoover has excellent schools. Birmingham proper - that is, the City of Birmingham - has the highest crime, poorest school system etc. There are several Montessori schools, but I cannot give you rates - my children are grown! But most Montessori schools are strictly nursery schools. $850,000 should buy you a lovely large home. Welcome to Alabama!

GHolt is on a distinguished road
Unionjack,
You will need to find a mortgage company that will fund a non-US citizen. They are out there and it can be done. I am a realtor in Mobile, AL and our area has just landed a steel mill contract with the German steel maker Thyssenkurpp. Our local lenders are responding with mortgages for German nationals who will be relocating to our area. Birmingham lenders will have similar programs for you.
Sorry, my girls are grown and I can't help you with part two of your question.
Make time to visit our area of the state when you get settled. We have lovely beaches with sugar white sand in neighboring Baldwin County. Mobile is full of wonderful historic homes, interesting museums and attractions. We were also the first city in the US to celebrate Mardis Gras. It is a gulf coast celebration from Texas to the Florida panhandle.
As the Cajuns in Louisianna say during Mardis Gras, "Laissiz les bons temps rouler!" "Let the good times roll!
Welcome to our South.
