I'm moving to the Birmingham area in two months for work. I'll be working over in Leeds but am looking to live somewhere with a little more nightlife. Based on everything I've read the southside seems to be the best and most diverse area for someone my age. I'd like to keep it within a 30 minute commute to work everyday.

I'm also going to be limited on options because I have a dog. I've got a few places in mind between Five Points South and Homewood but any advice or recommendations would be great. My pricing limit is flexible but I'm not wanting to spent more than $1000.

Thanks.

From Five Points eastward along Highland Avenue and then to Clairmont is pretty much rental heaven for a guy like you. Without a doubt you should find some place cool in that area for that budget. Make sure you're within walking distance of either Lakeview or Five Points. That would be a bonus.

Grab one of the free apartment finder flyers every supermarket has at the doors. Go through your area and start calling on pet deposits ... Then drive the area during a time of the day you will be home or walking.

Threestep, I'm moving in from out of state and will have a trip to scout it out but I need to have a few places in mind when I come down to visit. Thanks for the advice cpg, I'm looking at a few places around Homewood now. Pretty decent prices, less than 30 minutes to work and 2-3 miles to South Five Points.

Any concerns about having to use 280 or 459 to get to work? I'm assuming it wont be an issue since I'll be heading away from town.

Homewood is okay, but I really think Southside's where you want to be.

Cpg were you referring to something closer to the southside like this?

Crowne on 10th Apartments, 1420 10th Street South Birmingham, AL - Apartments for Rent on ApartmentGuide.com | Birmingham Alabama | 158990

This place is right at my pricing limit and I'm sure they'll have an additional pet fee to put it over $1000. My options are really kind of limited because of having a dog. Based on this anything within 2 miles of Five Points seems pretty reasonable.

That's not a terrible area, but I would recommend going a mile or so east along Highland Avenue. That's really where a single guy can be. I'm pretty sure you'll find an apartment in that area that will fit your price range.

One last question CPG, I found two apartments I'm looking at next week. Looks like the perfect area in downtown. I heard Highland Park is the nicest area and close distance to everything. Here's one of the address.

909 30th Street South
Birmingham, AL 35205

That area is really great. I can't speak to the apartment building per se, but as long as you get something with a little panache, you'll be totally happy.

Do check and make sure you're OK with whatever the heating and A/C are for the apartment you view. Southside runs the gamut, and some older buildings still have rad heat and window units. Or if central HVAC has been installed, it has consumed what used to be the/a closet. All that being said, Southside is great. I lived in the "Historic Berkeley" on Highland many moons ago before it was rehabbed and had its name changed. It was a great building.
