Not only did they secure the Tuskegee/Morehouse classic from Columbus, GA, now the city just passed this resolution to host yet another HBCU football game in the city along with the previous mentioned and the MCC. it passed this morning during today's council scheduled meeting.

Between the World Games, the USFL, the increased profile for the Birmingham Bowl, soccer, HBCU games, and increased attendance for UAB, this stadium is paying for itself many times over.

Those HBCU games are at LF, not Protective. The city of Birmingham’s Office of Innovation and Economic Opportunity department is being relentless when it comes to attracting and pursing events that will bring in outside dollars into the city. They have been grinding for the last few years on that. Regardless of how people feel about LF, that was a big part of the USFL being here, let's not forget that. it will be a practice facility for all 8 teams, as well. With Protective, Legacy, Barber's, Crossplex, and Region Field...the city can "hold it's own" when it comes to attracting events against other cities. Of course they won't win them all, but I think the goal is to get a few and keep working at it.

Thanks for the correction. Nevertheless, I remember a lot of whining about how the new stadium was a white elephant. It's going to prove anything but.

i have mixed feelings about Legion Field (and its future), but i'm glad to see them working at getting new events like this for it if they're going to keep putting money into it.

The stadium is most definitely not paying for itself many times over. Not yet. Not even close. It will take dozens of events per year for it be a break even investment.

As for increased UAB attendance... the early returns aren't really so great. These are just the announced figures. I have no idea if this is tickets sold, or how accurate the numbers really are.

2021
37k (first game in stadium)
25k
24k
21k
19k

2019
39k (vs Alabama State)
27k
23k
19k
19k
18k

they may inch up in 2022 as we further distance ourselves from COVID, but even if they do... hardly a night and day difference. more like night and late evening.

the birmingham bowl had 12k fewer people this time than it did when it was at legion field the last time auburn was there.

i'm glad we have the stadium but taking a victory lap on how it is paying for itself at this point is downright comical.

You're wrong. Good grief. The city's commitment to the stadium is $3,000,000 a year for thirty years. The city gets whatever they spend on the stadium back in hospitality tax revenue such as hotel rooms, restaurants, and a bump in other sales taxes.

With an estimated economic impact of $15 million, the USFL alone pays the freight for that in 2022. The Alabama High School football playoffs have returned. Other events are lining up to use the stadium. And UAB will begin to draw more as they move into a better conference playing better teams. Beating BYU certainly didn't hurt their football pedigree.

Meanwhile, your analysis of the Birmingham Bowl is lazy and flawed, probably out of a desperate need to be the contrarian in the room. Auburn fans pretty much bought tickets, attended the game, and then drove home. A game in a more desirable stadium hosting teams that are not local will draw a good deal more in terms of hotel and sales taxes.

You know, I'm LMFAO right now! Remember, the Bham bashers said, "Why build a new stadium when you don't have a professional team?" Well, we built a new stadium and gained both a professional team, and an entire professional league! The irony is too funny
