When you think of Mini, don't you think of a small, efficient car.....like this one-
or even the smaller offerings of the newly constituted name brand Mini from BMW? Or do you think of a car that is roughly the size of an older Grand Cherokee?
I'm looking forward to the new Mini Suburban, based on the Kenworth chassis.
Even the biggest current MINI is only the size of a VW Golf (a B segment car.) it may look huge compared to an original Mini, but it's still pretty small in comparison to modern cars.
Your picture of the Countryman is scaled weird due to the MINI being much closer to the camera than the Jeep in the background.

Nope, that's not true. I was there taking the picture, and didn't take it deliberately to make the C-Man look larger than it was.
And the new Golf isn't exactly the smallest car out there. They have gotten a bit larger as time has progressed. I was a bit shocked at how larger it's getting.
For comparison, specifications found at Edmunds.com
1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Width: 69.3inches
Height 64.9 in
Wheelbase: 105.9 in
2013 Mini Clubman S
Width 70.4 in (1.1inches wider)
Height 61.5 (probably due to ground clearance the mini isnt a 4x4)
Wheelbase 102.2 (3.7 inches shorter)
2013 VW Golf
Width: 70.3 in
Height 58.2 in
Wheelbase 101.5in
I took the photo with my cellphone camera, the two vehicles were parked within a couple of feet of each other. There is just no denying it, the new GerMini is not a small car.
Also ... IMO its pug ugly
And to be fair there is NOTHING "grand" about cherokees. They have about the smallest rear doors and rear seats imaginable for a supposed suv. They are second to GM's packaging of "half the size inside from what the outside size would have you assume". I havent been able to comfortably fit inside the back of one since I was about 12 years old since Im not a midget.
Most vehicles today are huge compared to their older counterparts. Take the corolla or a sentra. Those were tiny cars back in the 80s. Today they have grown a lot. Hell a civic is huge compared to what it was.
Cars have grown in size due to complexity of the safety and other systems, crash worthiness etc . We also have more room for bigger cars where in other parts of the world they simply are too big and cumbersome

We're also fatter and demand more room in our cars. Or the automotive companies believe that we demand more room. If you're about my size (6'2", 180 lbs), you could sit in anywhere within a "mid-sized" Passat or Accord and just wallow in the vast amounts of empty shoulder and leg room in the cabin.
Or, maybe I'm just way too used to the amount of room inside my Prius. To me, it has just about the perfect amount of space for a person of my size. IMO, unless you're obese, we really don't need as much room in our modern cars as we believe we do.
