You have a warantee. Take that car back and demand they take care of the rust- or else.

Actually most warrenties will only cover rust thru. A little rust on an exposed piece of metal will more than likely not be covered. Change out the screw and its fixed. the other part is also easily fixed. They should fix it as part of customer service but they don't have too.

precisely..i was dumbfounded with the screw.. the solution really is as easy as replacing the screw.. if i have a spare screw i will replace it myself.. you would think that since they are the dealer that they have spare crews lying around but nooooooo they did not replace it. i did not say a word coz i am 1400 miles short of the scheduled inspection 1 warranty check. i will go to another mini dealer and see if they give me another BS.. but this time, i will protest.

I believe I would be reading "the fine print" on the warranty about now, LBSer.

Either that or at least contacting Mini Customer Service with some very serious questions.

A little rust here and there leads to LOTS OF RUST all over in no time.

you know.. i hate contacting mini customer service coz their line is ALWAYS like this:
Thanks for writing MINI. I am sorry to hear of your concern with your baby.

and most often they advise you to go to the dealer... but i will still write them. as far as rust
is concerned. i know they have a 12yr warranty against rust and corrosion perforation. (according to the FAQ on their website)

also if you use a stainless steel screw as a replacement it will never rust again, good luck.

Great advice, Drilco.

Damn shame the manufacturer didn't think of that originally.

Maybe it's just my "local" dealer, but I've found my Mini dealer to be astounding (Rasmussen Mini in Portland, OR, for the plug). I had the same dealer for my BMW and wasn't too fond of them then, but the Mini has been great.

We recently moved out of the local service area, and when the electronic power steering pump went out, they came and GOT the car (275 miles), fixed it under warranty and brought it back. They also did the routine service, washed vacuumed and waxed the car. All on a car that cost $22,500 brand new.

There's also northamericanmotoring.com, which is a Mini-specific forum, and you can find out how other people have dealt with things like this (although, from what I understand, rust is not common on these cars).
