So we would like to visit Boise and surrounding area during the summer. We live in San Francisco CA and will probably drive there. We're into outdoor activities, love to taste local foods, etc. We have a 12-year old with is. Hope the locals can help me out.
What to see?
What to do?
What to eat?
Where to stay?
If I was to visit Boise I would definitely visit Ann Morrison Park, the Train Depot as well as stop by camels back park, the North End. The Village at Meridian is a new shopping center, movie theater and beautiful plaza with many restaurants.
Definitely stay downtown and make it your basecamp while you are here. There are a lot of hotel choices and the best restaurants in the valley are downtown.
I would suggest a late summer trip as we are on Flood Watch this year due to the historic snowfall we had this winter and the wet spring. The Boise River and Greenbelt will not be accessible this year as our flows are at flood stage and this will continue at least through mid August according to the Army Corp of Engineers. Some parts of our cities are on evacuation watch including all of the area known as Eagle Island. This too will continue for a couple of months.
Check out this website for info on visiting. They can mail you a great packet of visitor information.
It seems like there is always something going on. Farmer's markets, Alive After 5, Shakespeare plays, concerts, Greek, Jewish and Russian festivals, fairs, rodeos, etc. The 'real' mountains are either towards Cascade/McCall to the north, or Idaho City/Stanley to the north east. The Boise foothills are full of hiking trails, there's white water rafting on the lower Payette north of Boise. There are Oregon Trail, Basque, and Idaho history museums, a Birds of Prey visitors center, a zoo and a botanical garden. There's also the MK nature center. Silver City is in the Owyhee mountains to the south.
It really depends on what time you come and what you want to do.
Note: the weekend of August 21 there will likely be a huge influx of tourists. Idaho is in the prime viewing area of the total eclipse and hotels/campgrounds have been booked for months.
