Hi, We're an Air Force family currently stationed at Hill AFB in Utah. We may have orders to Mountain Home AFB. I'm a city girl by nature, a travel writer, and mom of a preschooler, so I know Mountain Home is not for me. We drove up to see it a few months ago, and were so discouraged by the area that we turned around and headed back to Utah without making it to Boise. Well, now I'm researching Boise, and it looks like a pretty nice city. I've heard that there are commuter vans to Mountain Home and wondered if you think it's realistic to commute. We're looking at the Southeast area of Boise to cut some time off the commute, so anything you can tell me about that area would be great. Thanks so much!
SE Boise would be a perfect fit for you. It's about a 45 min. commute to Mountain Home. Though I don't commute that way, winter time can be treacherous if we get a good dumping of snow. They do maintain the roads, but they can be more brutal the further east you go. I know there are several people who live in Boise and commute to Mountain Home which tells me it's do-able. I think you will find Boise a lot more to your liking...it's very family oriented, safe and a wonderful place to raise children. SE Boise has some of the best schools in the area, so your little one would be well situated as far as education goes. Plus the neighborhoods in that region are saturated with families so you'll have the opportunity to meet and mingle with others who might have little ones.
You'll only be 10min from downtown, so there will be opportunities abound for you and your family to enjoy. Make a second trip and check Boise out, I think you'll be quite pleased at what you see.
Thanks, Torrie! What are some of the subdivisions to look in SE Boise? I think we may rent instead of buy (just in case that commute turns out to be too much). I'd like to spend around $1000/mo so we can afford the commute. Do you think that's realistic for a 3 BR w/a family room, or a 4 BR? Thanks!
For rent you can expect to pay anywhere from $900 a month to $1200 a month. Vacancy rates are somewhere between 7 & 8% the last I heard. Look for vacancies in Columbia Village, Silverado, Trailside, Surprise Valley, Bown Crossing, Kelton Crossing... there's a ton over there to pick from...there really isn't any bad areas IMO, so you really don't have to worry about that. Try looking at Craigslist, a lot people seem to list on there.
Thank you, Torrie! I was just checking out some listings on your website but wasn't sure which subdivisions are the best.
